There are three major groups of audio file formats:
•Uncompressed - The most popular being  WAV, AIFF, BWAV, SDII
           
 
 
                     
     • WAV    It is a cross-platform file format.
     • AIFF     A cross-platform file format supported by a large number of digital video an      
                     applications. (Audio Interchange File Format)
    • BWAV  is a file that allows metadata information to be store in it, such as timecode.
                     (Broadcast  Wave)
     • SDII     is a file created by Digidesign for use in Pro Tools & Avid, it supports  
                              timecode. (Sound Designer II)
• Lossless           - FLAC, ATRAC and WMA 
• Lossy                - MP3, Vorbis, AAC, lossy WMA and others
